"Problems in Living" Proposal

In 1961, Thomas Szasz, a Hungarian-American psychiatrist, proposed that so-called mental illness should be conceptualized as "problems in living" instead of disease. In his book "The Myth of Mental Illness", he argued that both physical and mental illness is based on the idea of deviation from the norm. However, treating mental illness with medical remedies contradicted (and still contradicts) the "psychosocial and ethical" norm in diagnosing "mental illness".
