Before You Do Juice Cleanses: Take It with a Grain of Salt
The bottom line
It is beneficial to incorporate fresh veggie and fruit juices into your diet for their abundant vitamins and minerals. Some people also drink juices to jump-start a healthier eating pattern. But consuming juices only for days could also pose health consequences, such as fatigue, feelings of unsatiated, and constipation because juices are high in sugar but low in protein and leave out the fiber. It is also important to know that juice cleanses don't flush toxins out of your system or help you lose weight in the long run as pitched by juice cleanses companies. According to Harvard medical school, "[the academia] has not confirmed the safety of prolonged juice fasts and detoxification diets." If you are determined to detox your body, include more veggies, fruits, whole grains, nuts and seeds, and beans for their rich fiber, and drink plenty of water to help with your bowel movement.
