How Did All These Foods Get Their Misleading Names?
French toast is French?
Was French toast invented by the French? In France, French toast is called "lost bread" because people use stale bread to make the dish. The earliest record of dipping toast in milk or egg before frying can be dated as early as the 5th century BC in Rome. The term "French toast" first appeared in 15th century England, where "to French" means "to slice" in Old Irish. Some claim that after the Great Famine, Irish travelers brought the term to the States. Meanwhile, because Americans traditionally admire the French lifestyle, chefs got to popularize their dishes easily by naming the dish French toast.
