Seriously? Cutting Back on Salt?
The bottom line
Sodium and chloride in salt are both crucial for human survival and the maintenance of bodily functions. But too much salt can have negative implications on health, increasing the likelihood of high blood pressure, heart attack, and heart failure. It is important to know that there isn't a one-size-fits-all recommendation for daily sodium intake due to individual differences. But if you are over the age of 50 or have pre-existing high blood pressure or diabetes, you are recommended by AHA, WHO, and CDC to limiting your salt intake to one teaspoon. More importantly, keep in mind that sodium intake is just one aspect of improving your blood pressure and cardiovascular health. It is also important to focus on healthy eating, weight control, exercise, and stress regulation.
